My "Not So" Secret Addiction

Ok. It's time for me to come clean. I've skimmed over it before acted like it was nothing but it's finally time for me to come clean. They say that the first step to fixing an addiction is to admit that you have a problem. Well folks I have a giant problem. I am addicted to buying and watching dvds.
I don't rent. I don't netflix. I buy.
Infact... I've bought so many movies that I had a carpenter build me a custom built dvd shelf because those in store ones weren't big enough. Then, I did the unthinkable I filled the first shelf and had to get him to build me a second one. And guess what... I love it. I feel no remorse. A lot of people say, "Oh my goodness, you have so many dvds. Do you really need them? That's crazy that you have so many." Um is it? Because I don't think so. I like them. They make me happy. It doesn't hurt anyone. I pay my bills. It's not like I'm out in an alley buying dvds and can't pay rent. I do not care what people think.

To all those people who say that.... from the words of Kathy Griffin... SUCK IT!
Plus I'm not gonna let you borrow them. So feast your eyes on this collection. Minus about 30 that I hadn't put on my shelfs yet.

The beginnings of my 2nd shelf!
A few facts: I keep them in alphabetical order. There's no vhs's on the either shelf and I usually don't loan them out. I have 46 television series' on dvd. So yes... there you have it. My collection. Can you eye spy any ones that you have?

  1. Wow, that's awesome. I kind of thought I bought a lot of TV series dvd's. But not in comparison to you. I like your shelves.

  2. WOW! That's impressive! Those shelves look really nice, too. Husband and I have been working on our collection (especially kid's movies), but as of now, it fits within our console.

  3. Holy smokes! We don't have near that many and don't have room for them but like you said, you pay your rent and bills so it doesn't matter.

  4. Holy crap! Now that is a lot of DVDs. You would probably be so sad if you saw my small collection. We used to have a pretty large collection but we decided to sell them so we could make room for the new ones. Sad, I know.

  5. I am completely jealous of your collection.

  6. I knew this about you...

Now if I could alphabetize my shoes I would have you in the running with my shoe collection..lol

What a fabulous collection! I think I may come visit and we can just lay out and watch movies for 4 days!

  7. I used to buy a ton too, but have slowly stopped! I love that shelf!! I think it looks pretty cool. :) Recently I bought a huge binder and got rid of my dvd shelf... I'm kinda regretting it though. :(

  8. I'm showing my husband the custom shelves - we need one BADLY! Now, i don't think we have enough to start on a second shelf that HUGE, but we love buying movies, too. I love how yours are alphabetical - Todd likes to categorize according to genre, sometimes actor, sometimes it just gets really confusing - and I can never find anything! LOL... Love this post! Thanks for sharing your obsession.

  9. I LOVE that you alphabetize them! I have my DVDs, books and music all alphabetized and my hubby thinks I'm insane.

  11. Holy Moly. You should seriously start your own Netflix-y business. Good for YOU!!!! Seriously though, I'm in awe. :)

  12. Wow. I'm really impressed. I only have about 220, but they are most certainly alphabetized. I'm jealous of yours!

  13. DVD and book buying is my weakness. I just can't stop. I don't have as many DVD's as you do. I did buy the largest DVD cabinet (it looks similar to yours but not quite as big)available at the store and filled it up-twice! I need another one. Also my daughter has her own cabinet with DVD's and books that she is outgrowing. Oh yeah, books-I have even more books than I do DVDs. When we move it is some furniture a couple of boxes of dishes, a couple of boxes of kid toys.....and fifty+ boxes of dvds and books. We have to get the BIG truck!

  14. Love your collection girl. If I could I'd do the same but can't due to space issues. I buy mine too, and don't rent or netflix either (doesn't exist here anyways). :D

So, there you go. I love your collection, because it shows I'm not the only one obsessed with DVDs. ;) YAY!!!! Be proud of your collection girl. YAY!

    xoxo

  17. I have a lot too - not that many, but I'm on my way. They're currently all sitting in boxes in my parent's basement though (with about 250+ in a DVD case here in Budapest with me...)

  18. Holy Moly girl!! Kelsey is well on his way but I will never let it happen. no way, no how. But at least you watch him -- he just buys to be buying.

  23. OMG girl! I seriously wanna come over and have a MOVIE MARATHON!!! :-)

  24. WOW! All I have is one DVD binder thing to hold mine. I could probably fill up two of those shelves with VHS's though.. I had way too many boxes of VHS tapes in storage at my mom's!

  25. My stepdad has a similar addiction so you are not alone. Every Sunday morning you find him scouring the ads in the newspaper for the $5 dvds on sale at Best Buy and other places :0) He has a really great collection! Live your life as you want to live it. It's nobody's business. Love the shelves!

    Have a great weekend,
    Candace

  26. I love the image of you homeless and in the alley buying DVDs. If it gets that bad then I'll admonish you. But otherwise I'm glad you have something that makes you happy.

  27. Great collection lady! I have a huge movie collection too, I have to show you one of these days!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh my goodness!! The next time I wanna rent a movie, I should just turn to you! Your collection is amazing...I love it! :)

  29. Wow that's an incredible collection! Your shelves are fantastic - I would love something like that for all my books. I have a silly question: How do you keep track of the older movies? I have a lot of books and have definitely bought a book or two that I already have, but I haven't figured out a good system for preventing duplicates (aside from putting all my titles in a spreadsheet).

  30. I'm not sure I've seen a collection like that outside of a store like blockbuster!

  31. I love your blog, so I've given it a Lovely Blog Award. Stop by when you get a chance!

  32. I'm so impressed - that must have been a task getting them all in alpha order. Now do you just maintain it every time you buy a DVD? Do you keep a spreadsheet of everything you have too for reference?

    ReplyDelete
  33. WHOAH, I'm totally impressed!! And I'm the same way about my books, which is like your dvd collection: I never loan them out!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. That was my one question, how did you organize them. I am seriously lacking in dvds. We have like 25 of them? Your collection is awesome. I hope you have movie night at your place a lot. My sister has this cool server thing where their tv/netflix/all their dvds are on the same server so they don't need the actual dvd to watch them. It's sweet.

  35. I think it's great! I'd love to have a collection like that. Or even more probably, I'd love to be able to have the shelving to hold a collection like that. You definitely shouldn't worry about what been think. But aren't you a little scared for what's going to happen when everyone starts switching from dvds to blu-rays?

  36. WOW! I am jealous of that collection!
