It's OFFICIAL I'm Moving!

This is the most exciting and scary post I have ever had the pleasure of writing.

On March 17, 2011 I placed myself on the transfer list at my job and set the location on three choices: Long Beach, California, Burbank, CA and Sacramento, CA with Sacramento being my top choice.
Yesterday after the long wait and when I was least expecting it, I got the phone call. I was at a work training event and almost didn't pick up the phone call because I thought it was a tele-marketer call. When they offered me the spot I was so thrilled. I didn't cry, I didn't get sad, I was just thrilled that after such a long wait and after thinking last month that they wouldn't call ever that it finally really did happen.

As the day went on, I started thinking about all the people and things that I'd leave behind and I did feel a tiny bit sad. Then the fear set in. What if I go broke moving? OMG, I won't know anyone! What if I hate my new work place? What schedule will I be working? I have no place to live right now! And so on and so on. Then I took a deep breath.

I have to take it one day at a time. I have eight weeks to box up my stuff, get a moving van, find a new place to live, etc. I'm going to take it one day at a time because that's the only way I know how to do it. When I feel the fear taking over, I have to remember that everyone has to take a leap of faith for something amazing to happen.

So it's official... I am MOVING to CALIFORNIA in August.

PS: if anyone has done a cross country move and has suggestions please feel free to pass them on.

Having had moved across the country no less than 7 times now the only advice I have is " purge" you have 8 weeks to clean out stuff you have not used in 6 months... and to answer your question "no you will not need it" be ruthless and downsize it feels so good. When we move to San Francisco and the hubby said we would be there 5 years we took only what we needed. The 7 year old couch and love seat..gone... the old coffee tables.. gone..
it was cheaper to move one and because we were unsure of what the space would be it ended up perfect. And the money we saved not moving it we replaced it! Also shop around for movers we loved and always moved with Allied

Congrats!!!

I haven't moved across country, but my husband did when he was a child. He moved from Los Angeles to Washington DC.

I've moved 1300 mi from TX to MN. It sucked. Make sure you have a bf, family, friend, etc. But only 1. You don't need a ton of people. Pack snacks, music (because you willg et sick of each other).

Are you apt shopping? I can kinda help you with that?

Congrats on your transfer! As a former army wife, I have several cross-country moves under my belt and I did them all 'myself' to save money. If you are concerned about expenses, definitely rent your own truck and drive it / have someone trusted drive it. If that isn't an option, look into ABF U-Pack - you pack the truck and they drive it to your destination.

If you aren't comfortable with heavy lifting (like me!) look up local moving companies where you are and where you are moving - see if you can hire two guys for an hour or two to move your boxes and furniture INTO your truck (once you have already packed everything up) and into your new place once you are at your destination. I have done this several times since I never had family nearby to help, and I consider it the best money I have ever spent. Usually its around $125-$150, and they have gotten ALL of my belongings in 1-1.5 hours. I always did a LOT of cleaning out, too, and sold furniture I didn't love on craigslist so I could fit everything into the smallest space possible. Those cross-country moves get EXPENSIVE! Good luck :)

Ok, I learned the hard way that I can't comment on a blog from my phone. I was so excited about your move that I kept trying thought. Congrats on Sacramento, I hope that you love it there, and I hope you don't get allergies. In April last year my husband was miserable because of the pollen in the air. But...don't think of that, think of how awesome California is!
