Live PD

You guys... I’m obsessed with this show.

Currently in it’s third season (I’ve been watching since the first season) and airing 2-3 times a week but always on Friday and Saturdays, this show brings a real faces to the police officers working around the country night after night. It also brings a face to the real problems that American cities are facing. 

Moderated by Dan Abrams in his lovable sweaters and corny jokes, he’s joined by veteran police officer Sean “Sticks” Larkin from Tulsa, Oklahoma and DC crime specialist Tom Morris Jr (who’s seriously passionate about his missing segments) each week. These three men discuss and comment on what we see go down on Live PD. Let’s get into what the show is all about Incase you’ve never seen an episode. 

Camera crews follow around several police departments around the country all at the same time and live. When I say live, I’ve heard there is a 5-15 minute delay in the footage due to bleeping out people’s last names and socials as they give them to officers. I believe the delay is also Incase of a serious crime occurring (however we have seen people stabbed, shot and tased on the show). Some of the police departments that are currently featured weekly include-

Warwick, Rhode Island
Green County, Missouri
Salinas, California
Franklin County, Ohio
Pasco County, Florida

Many departments participate in the show and up to 16 departments can be featured. The show goes to which ever department is having the most interesting crime or incident occurring. Dan, Tom and Sean are often seen catching us up on what’s occurred while they go to break or in between finding out what is going on with another department. As the show happens live, people are released from traffic stops, drugs are found on commercial break etc and they let us know after by giving the updates. 

While the show might seem very much like COPS. It is indeed not and it’s very much it’s own show. Departments are often shown in the good and the bad situations. We see real towns, with real people and real problems. We see the serious drug epidemic that is sweeping the nation. We see gangs, we see people nightly with suspended licenses, drunk drivers etc. However, we also see the good. We see people trying to help one another. We see people taking an active part in their community to rid it of the bad apples. We see Officers trying to explain the law to citizens. We see Officers trying to bridge that gap in areas where the police may not be that trusted. We see Officers showing kindness to others, giving respect and just asking for it back in return. 

This isn’t a show that just shows cities and towns at it’s worst. It’s a show that’s trying to bridge a divide that’s been deep and forefront recently in the news. These cities are trying to clean up their towns, get people help and trying to educate the public that we are all working together to keep people safe and that everyone needs to take part in it. 

Did I mention there’s dogs? That’s just an added bonus to the show. K-9 units are featured in several departments and these dogs work just as hard as their handlers when it comes to sniffing out crime. UIKEYINPUTUPARROW

What I Watched in 2018

I was on maternity leave for three months so that helped me burn through some shows. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Altered Carbon and Jack Ryan. I liked Altered Carbon so much so that I watched the entire season one twice. I can't wait for Season 2! I also got sucked back into the life of Jersey Shore. I can't believe how crazy those people are still! But hey... they entertain and they make that money. 

I started watching season 2 of Making a Murderer. I got lost in the blood breakdown but I'll catch up again. I'm still waiting on them to be released! I firmly believe that Brendan was coerced and did not partake in the crime.



I need to watch season 3 of Man in the High Castle but I still firmly believe that Joe doesn't want to be a Nazi. I still have faith in him.

 

I can't say enough about the Bodyguard on Netflix. I was sad to hear that it was meant to only be a one season, mini series. I am happy to report that they are in talks for a season 2. I just thought this was so well done and really entertaining. 

Who killed Sister Cathy? I'm still waiting to find out. I hope those women never give up. I wonder if it was that male priest? Was it the cops? Who was it!? How has time gone on all these years and they still don't know.

What I'm Watching

There seems to be an abundance of great television shows out right now. Between finding time to watch the new ones, staying current on favorite shows and finishing series of ones ending it's hard sometimes to know what to really watch. Below are a few of the new shows out there, that are worth taking the time to watch. Here's three new shows that I think you should invest in...

Altered Carbon

You might recognize the lead actor in the new Netflix show, Altered Carbon. He was previously in a famous Netflix show called The Killing. I'm about 7 episodes in on his new show Altered Carbon and I'm really enjoying it. It has an original story line and it leaves you guessing. The story is set 300 years into the future, our society has developed new technology that makes death no longer something permanent. They've found a way to make bodies aka sleeves interchangeable. You can be plugged into anyone and keep living forever. When a very rich and powerful man is murdered but continues to live because of his backup data, he wants to know who and why. That's when he brings back a hired gun to find answers. However, the hired gun doesn't want to be brought back and he doesn't want to do anyone else's bidding.

MindHunter

I burned through season one on Netflix. Now I'm impatiently waiting for season two. I love all things true crime (probably because I majored in Criminal Justice) and real life stories brought to the screen. Set in the late 1970s, two FBI Agents go out in the field to research why serial killers behave the way that they do. They hope to find out the root of what causes people to commit these acts in the hopes of being able to predict movement and stop murders from happening. They follow real life cases that you can research and look up. Since a lot of the criminals and crimes they follow took place in California, they focused several episodes on people who are located near where I live today. It's very interesting to go and look up the real information and compare it to the show.

If you like true crime and shows like this one, then I highly recommend it!

9-1-1

I usually don't watch a lot of shows currently on cable television. I'm always scared their going to cancel them (which usually happens when I really like something). So when my husband started recording this show and we started watching it, I got nervous because I like it. 9-1-1 isn't like all of those other fire and cop shows out there (I'm looking at you Chicago series). This one takes a fresh approach on emergency situations. It shows how a 9-1-1 dispatcher can play a big part in emergencies. It shows how fire and police work together and it shows the personal lives of the men and women behind the uniform. This show is currently in it's first season on FOX and I'm really hoping it doesn't get the ax at the end of the spring. Give it a watch! It's worth an hour of your time.

Then there's he shows that I'm staying current on. These shows are in different seasons and I'm still loving them and I'm anxiously awaiting a few to return with a new season...

4 Shows to Watch Right Now

I love finding a great, new television show to watch! I also love when we get recommendations so if you know of something great to watch let me know! Right now we've find a few new shows to occupy our time since several of our other shows have gone on break. Plus when it's a show that's available all at once (like Netflix shows) we burn through them fast! Here's a few shows that we've watched and really liked...

The Missing

My husband found this show and we just finished watching season one. Season one is about a man named Tony and his wife trying to find out what really happened to their son 8 years after he went missing. Tony has never given up in trying to find their son after he disappeared one night while they were on vacation in France from London. With the help of the original investigator they go on a journey to find Oliver the missing boy and to try to piece together what happened eight long years ago.

There is several seasons of The Missing out but we have only finished season one. Each season revolves around a different story line so season two will have all new characters in it.

Murder in the First

This show use to be on TNT but now it's available to stream on Hulu. There was three seasons of this show before it was cancelled and I have no idea why it was cancelled. It was so good! We watched the entire series in a weekend because we literally binged watched it for three days. The show is set in San Francisco and follows San Francisco homicide detectives Terry and Hildy who are partners. Together they work the streets of San Francisco. Each season is about a different murder/crime and their truth to find out who the killer is.

A fun fact for us was that Hildy's neighborhood in the show is actually the street where my husband's cousin lives so we would see their house in the background anytime they showed scenes with Hildy coming or going to her house. We love that it was set in S.F. because in all of the shows scenes you get to see more of the city.
 Timeless

I'm so worried their going to cancel this show. It's currently on NBC and they still have not confirmed a season two. Viewers continue voice their love of the show online but the network continues to harp on their numbers being low for live audience. Well I'm sorry but who's up at 10:00 p.m. on a Monday watching it live instead of watching it on DVR? This home girl has a job and can't stay up that late which is I'm sure the case for most people. I really do love this show so I'm hoping it gets a season two.

Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus find themselves in a different time period with every episode. They are a three man team that is working to save history because a man named Flinn is going back into time and changing big moments in history. Together these three will try to preserve history and not change the future in the process.

I want to pre-face this show by saying that I have always hated James Franco. I can't stand anything that he's in and usually refuse to watch anything with him in it. When I heard of this show though, I wanted to watch it because I love everything to do with the Kennedys. When watching this show, I actually don't have a problem with Franco. He does a good job in making me forget who he actually is.

In this eight episode mini series, Jake (Franco) goes back in time using a wormhole in the local diner to a time before JFK was assassinated. He's on a mission to make sure that the assassination doesn't happen. He lives in the past for three years to try and track down Oswald and learn if he's working alone or with others. He hides himself in history and tries to do everything in his power to keep JFK alive.

5 Streaming Finds

The winter break from cable television shows allowed us to catch up on some old favorites that came back for new seasons on Netflix and Amazon Prime. It also afforded us with the luxury of trying out some new shows. Here's five great finds that are available for your streaming pleasure. So if you find yourself sitting on the couch and having nothing to watch check out any one of these picks and you won't go wrong.

Amanda Knox

This is the documentary that Netflix put together. It features interviews by the major players in the real life story of Amanda Knox. Don't know who that is? Amanda Knox is an American who was studying abroad in a tiny town inside Italy. A few weeks into her study abroad her roommate (whom she had only known the time she was in Italy) was found brutally murdered inside their home. After a few days Amanda and her boyfriend (of only 5 days) were both arrested for her murder.

I remember her being on the news but I never really followed the trial or the story. When we sat down and watched the documentary, I instantly thought she was guilty. She does seem like she could be a psychopath (which she says in her own words) or she was cornered and labeled a killer when really she wasn't. As I watched I went from thinking she was crazy to just some young girl who was wrongly accused. Watch it and decide for yourself.

Paranoid

I can't remember if I'm mentioned this show but either way I'm giving it a plug. This was an 8 episode mini series centering around the murder of one woman in a smaller town outside of London. It turns out it doesn't matter where you are because small town crimes can lead to big time corruption. BBC has been turning out some majorly good television and this show is no exception. I'm hearing rumors their going to come back for a season two and I'm desperately hoping those rumors are true.

The Crown

 

Who doesn't love a little good British history? If you've followed the modern royal family over the years with Princess Diana, Prince Charles and all of his debacles or the fabulous Prince William and Kate then you will find this show on Netflix especially good. In The Crown, we see what it was like when Queen Elizabeth II came to be on the thrown and how she handled coming to power. This show is entertaining and historically correct in many aspects. I'm about half way through the season and it's great.

The Man in the High Castle Season 2

Streaming on Amazon Prime, season two just went live in November. To say that I was excited for it's release was an understatement. I have been waiting since last November for season two. I can't get enough. I might even read the book that the show is based on. While America is no longer America, citizens live in a world where we lost the war. Nazi's control the east coast and the Japanese control the west coast. However, there is a small resistance trying to bring America back to what it was.

I know Nazi's are bad but I desperately want Nazi Joe to be with Julienne Krane. I mean he can't be all that bad if he's upset with the Nazi government for killing innocent people?

The Fall Season 3

If you haven't watched season 1 or 2. Then stop reading this and go rectify that. Season 1 and 2 were great. Each episode was leave you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. In season three.... honestly I was really disappointed. BUT it finished the show. We knew going into season three that this was going to be the final season and it was only 5 episodes. The five episodes put closure on all of the story lines but it wasn't highly entertaining like the previous seasons. I enjoyed it but I was sad it didn't have the same spark that the first seasons brought.

4 Shows You Shouldn't Skip on Netflix

I am loving the British crime shows. I don't know what's going on over in England but I hope they continue to crank these shows out. They've had Luther, The Fall, Crossing Lines and countless others that are top notch! Marcella is about a woman who's spent the last decade being a housewife. Before she devoted her life to being a mother, Marcella use to be a detective with the London police. Now with her personal life is in turmoil and the kids growing up and gone she goes back to doing what she knows how to do... finding killers.

 

Hinterland is another show that takes place overseas in Wales. Hinterland follows Detective Tom Mathias who has recently just relocated from London to this far out of the way place in Wales known as Hinterland. On his new team he is paired with Rhys, a strong female detective who quickly becomes his right hand woman. As each case unfolds we begin to learn more and more about Tom. We begin to learn more about his closely guarded personal life. One thing for sure, Rhys and the other detectives can't get the information out of Tom about why he's working and living in Wales now. Each case brings us a little bit closer to Tom while he's out there looking for murderers.

We binged watched this show in a day and it's perfectly 80s. I love everything about it. I love the opening credits, the clothing, the music, the attitudes. It's the perfect television show and if you didn't know it you would think that it was actually made during the 1980s. Netflix just announced season two will be happening and I can't wait! My favorite characters from season one were Barbara and Dustin.

 

The show follows four young boys who come off a little nerdy to the rest of the world. When one of them goes missing on his ride home from hanging out the town and the boys begin to look for him. As things unfold, nothing appears quite like it should. The local police Chief Jim Hopper and the boys mother, Joyce begin to learn piece by piece that her son Will is out there and in serious danger. At the same time the three boys- Lucas, Dustin and Mike meet a young girl with a shaved head. She won't speak to them at first but they learn her name is Eleven and begin to call her El. They realize she's in some sort of trouble and hide her in Mike's basement. 

 

I don't want to give too much away but trust me... watch this show! If you see the preview and think that it's just some kid show, you are surely wrong! 

 

Longmire has been out for awhile now but I just recently discovered it. I had always thought it was about Lou Diamond Phillips because he's on the show square on Netflix but it turns out he's just a supporting character. I'm currently in season two and I'm loving it! Walt Longmire is about Sherriff Longmire in Wyoming. He's a man who's been Sherriff for years but recently his home life has gotten in the way of his job. Losing his wife to cancer took a toll on him. His daughter, a lawyer has moved back to town to help look after him. What she doesn't realize is he's ready to get back to work. Longmire goes back to work but he's got competition for his job now with one of his Officers vying for Sherriff in the next election- Branch Connelly. The election splits the town down the middle and since there is a large Cheyenne Indian Reservation that will also be voting, he's got to mend some fences with them.

 

This show is amazing. I love the scenery. It makes me want to visit Wyoming and see if that's really what it looks like.

5 Reasons Why Netflix Needs to Revive Stalker

Stalker was a great show. It aired on CBS in the fall of 2014 and instantly made me start looking over my shoulder. The show followed Lt. Beth Davis and her Threat Assessment Unit inside the Los Angeles Police Department. Beth and her team investigated cases of stalking, cyber harassment, voyeurism and romantic fixation. Beth being driven by her own personal experience as a victim could understand the victims and had in depth knowledge of how a stalker mind thinks. Ben and Janice her team members are equally skilled in understanding the thought process of a stalker. When a new member is added to the team, Jack, a transfer from New York. The team begins to buckle a little. However, Jack is skilled in understanding how a stalker thinks and adds vast knowledge to the team. His personality is what's got him into trouble before and may again.

I loved this show. It had 20 episodes air and when I heard it was being cancelled, I was so sad! I got on the internet and there was tons of other people posting about how they thought it was insane that CBS was cancelling this excellent program. So queue up Netflix! This is a platform that I think it would do amazingly well on. I mean look at The Killing. It was on for a season and TNT cancelled it. Netflix picked it up and finished it and people are still watching it and loving it. This could the next show that they pick up and give it another go. Here's my five reasons why I think Netflix should give it a shot...

1. It's believable. All of the stories and the plots they were 100% believable. I don't know about you but I've been watching a show before and once something happens that could never happen I get turned off by the show. In every episode those horrible things could happen to you or someone you know. That's what made it scary because it was believable.

2. The music. The show did it's own original versions of classic songs. It was one of it's staples. At the end of every episode they would take a classic song and turn it into it's own new version. It was always interesting and we would wait to see which song they picked and hear how they chose to perform it.

3. The plot lines. The storylines were original. They weren't horribly played out, redone story lines from every cheesy movie you've ever seen about stalker. They were intricate and you never knew what was going to happen next.

4. CBS put all their eggs in one basket that fall television season. Stalker debuted the same time as Madam Secretary. The network put all their advertising time and money into Madam Secretary (which is a good show) and left Stalker out in the cold. It was like you had to pump it by word of mouth to let people know about it. Once you'd mention though the people who watched were loving it. This could happen easily with Netflix. People don't have cable but they've got Netflix.

5. CBS gave it the worst time slot. The show started on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. I'm sorry but I'm an adult and have a full time job. I get up early and don't have time to watch an hour long show at 10pm at night. I would DVR it and watch it the next day though! Then it went to Monday's at 9:00 p.m. after a few months. Well how can you get into a new show if you're moving it around? You can't. Netflix people could watch it at anytime! Binge watch!

Summer Shows Worthy of Watching

Summer television can mean non stop repeats and the return of outplayed reality TV game shows. Thankfully this summer we've found a few shows that have kept us highly entertained. While I'm still bitter about my shows that have been cancelled, I'm taking a gamble and watching these shows. Now I'm hoping they don't get cancelled.

Billions

 

This is a Showtime show and it's really interesting and entertaining. The show focuses on Axle who owns a stock exchange. He was the only surviving partner of a huge firm after 9/11 and he's making a huge fortune. We aren't talking millions we are talking Billions of dollars. When the U.S. Attorney gets wind that he might be making some of his money illegal he begins to take an interest in Axle.

 

Even with my limited knowledge of the stock market, insider trading, the FCC etc, the show is really good. I've watched the first episode so far and I really like it. The cast is full with veteran actors that add to the show.

Animal Kingdom

 

Animal Kingdom is the new show on TNT. It follows this California family who's lead by their mother, Smurf. When Jay her grandson comes to live with them after his mother (Smurf's daughter) dies of an overdose the house goes a little crazy. The boys in the family are not excited to have someone new in their household and rightfully so. This isn't your ordinary family. They live a life of crime and keep it all in the family. Smurf is all about family and she wants to include young Jay in their dealings. The other sons don't know if they can trust him so everyone is looking over their shoulder.

I personally think this show is very good. I love Ellen Barkin who plays Smurf and she plays the role perfectly. The family dynamic is entertaining and interesting. They are crazy! So you never really know what to expect from them.

O.J. Made In America

 

The bronco chase happened literally on my 10th Birthday. I can remember my grandma sitting in our living room in our pink chair watching the chase with my mom and I. I have always been fascinated with this case and the fact that he was found innocent. This documentary takes us from O.J.'s beginnings, through his first marriage, his marriage to Nicole, the trial and the years after. It ends focusing on the reason why he's behind bars today. The documentary is broken into 5 parts and lasts 10 hours total.

I thought it was done extremely well and doesn't let the fact that two people lost their lives get lost in the story.

Why I Can't Get Too Attached to a Television Show

We've all been there. It's the evening, you've just ate dinner and now your looking for something to watch on television. You see or hear about a new show and turn it on. You watch the first episode and get hooked. You set your DVR and tune in the next week and eventually you can't wait for your show each week. Then one day your looking at Google news or someone tells you that your beloved show has been cancelled. I know what you're thinking. It can't be true! They are all wrong! You frantically type the show name and cancelled into the Google search bar and sadly the results let you know that the dirty word cancelled. It is indeed correct.

Well folks, this happened to me recently and I just can't let it go. First it happened a year or two ago with a show called Stalker. This show was amazing. My husband and I couldn't wait each week to watch it. It was never predictable and you were always surprised by who the killer was or the plot turns that they took. We were completely shocked when it didn't get a renewal for season 2. I even emailed CBS and let them know my level of pissed off. Yep, I sure did e-mail them!

Slowly I got over it and found other shows to watch. The thought of having one of my shows cancelled right out from under my nose long forgot. Then it struck again.

My favorite summer show got the ax.

For the past two summers, I've been watching the Halle Berry show Extant.

 

Last week with the approach of June, I knew my show would be coming back soon. I thought it odd that I hadn't seen any of the previews for the show but since we DVR most of our programs and fast forward the commercials I didn't think too much about it. So I went to my trusty Google search and typed in Extant season 3. In 0.003 seconds I saw multiple articles with the headline Cancelled. NO!!!! Say it isn't so! So what did I do? Read through every article I could find with my finger tips and found out that my beloved summer show would not be back for season 3.

What am I suppose to watch this summer? The 27th version of a game show or survivor season? No. I mean really... how am I to go along all summer wondering if Holly and JD are still together?!

Ok... I've calmed down. Now I've caught the pilot episode to Animal Kingdom and it's very good. I really like it but I'm scared to get attached. TNT Don't let me know or you'll be on my list of haters like CBS. So word to the wise kids... only invest in shows that are on minimum season 4.

4 Shows Recently Discovered

Crossing Lines

We just discovered this show on Netflix last week and it's so good! I can't believe I had never heard of it before. It originally aired overseas and is available for everyone online. This show takes detectives from all around the world to make up one team. They've got officers from Berlin, London, New York, Ireland, Paris and more making up this international team of Detectives who track down cross border crimes. Each episode they'll be in several cities following, tracking and investigating their cases.

Boardwalk Empire

 

I know I'm a little late on starting this show but I am loving it! We are currently in the middle of season one and I find it so interesting. They've taken real life events like prohibition and real people like Al Capone and ran with it. I can't wait to see what happens because I'm hoping that two of the characters get together. Set in Atlantic City we see how people were really affected with prohibition and how both sides lived with it.

Game of Silence

This a new show on television and has only had three episodes air. I'm always a little leery of spring shows because you never know if their going to make it. This show is about a group of adults who use to be childhood friends. When an accident sent the boys of the group to juvenile prison that's where everything in their lives would change. Flash forward to 20 years later and we are learning what really went on in that prison and how it's effecting their lives today. Each episode we learn something new about their lives and what they've been going through. Now that one of their own is dead they'll stop at nothing to get revenge and set things right in the world for others who were victims.

The Catch

This a new show currently airing on ABC. I watched the pilot and wasn't really that impressed with it. Now that a few episodes have aired it's getting better. We originally watched it because the main actress was the star of one of our favorites shows, The Killing. The Catch follows Alice (Enos) as a private investigator in Los Angeles who's planning her upcoming wedding. Her fiancé Benjamin has been with her over the last year and they are buying their first house together. When a case that she's investigating hits close to home, she rushes home and all around town looking for her missing fiancé.

She arrives home to find him gone and all of her money along with him. He scammed her and it turns out that Benjamin never really existed. Now before she's embarrassed and ruined in the investigation business she's got to find him and get her life back together.

4 Shows You Need to Catch Up On

Bosch

Available via Amazon Prime

We just finished watching season one and I loved it! I had no idea it was based on a book series until I was already finished with season one. Bosch is about Harry Bosch an L.A. homicide detective who's on the hunt for a serial killer. In season one we see him trying to reconnect with his daughter, working his cases and trying to get out of a legal mess from a previous case that ended bad. He's everything you think a real L.A. detective would be!
Season two just became available and I have a feeling we will be watching this over the weekend. I think I might even get the first book in the series and see if it's as good as the show. As far as I'm concerned the books are usually far better!


House of Cards

We binged watched Season 4 in three days and now we have to wait an entire year for season 5 to hit Netflix. It was just so good we couldn't stop watching. Season three was a little slow so I was worried that season four wouldn't be any good. Well we were pleasantly surprised because season four picked up the pace and didn't disappoint. Frank Underwood is back to his old tricks of lying, manipulation and deceit to hold on to everything he wants and needs. Set in Washington D.C. it follows Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his wife Claire (Robin Wright) who are a powerful political duo. They will stop at nothing to climb the latter of power in Washington and when things couldn't get any further out there they take it a step further. They have people helping them of course... Watch it from Season one because this show isn't one to be missed.


Girls

Ok. I've talked about Girls before. I watched season one and didn't really know what to think. I wasn't for sure if I really liked the show or not. It was confusing to me. I couldn't understand why the characters behaved that way and got themselves into the situations they did even thought they didn't want to be in them. I pressed forward and watched season two. I laughed more and I actually started to understand them. I think during season one I was expecting this to be exactly like Sex and the City because the comparisons are there but these girls are younger, poorer and thoroughly confused. I'll be watching season three next.


Major Crimes

Available via TNT network

I have only watched the last two seasons of Major Crimes but it's entertaining and the characters are likeable. The show follows the homicide detective unit inside of the Los Angeles Police Department. By doing so we get to see the relationship that each character has with each other and how they intertwine. Each episode brings a new murder for them to solve. In this last season they spent have the season looking for a killer who had murdered several victims. The 88th Academy Awards

On Sunday in Hollywood, California the 88th Academy Awards were held! Oscar night! Leo finally won his elusive Oscar and Kate Winslet was there to witness it. Chris Rock bombed at points in the show and Girl Scout cookies were freely ate during the show. Best performance of the night went to Lady Gaga singing her nominated song. The fashion did not disappoint! Actors and actresses wowed the red carpet with color and style. Let's take a look at a few of my picks...

I love Kate but I didn't love this dress. She is usually so glamorous and stylish on the red carpet. This dress though... at one point I thought it was made out of plastic. I think her hair and make up looked great!
