Planning a move that is long distance has become a second full time job.
If you've ever moved then you know exactly what I'm talking about. I waited over a year to finally get to move and in that time, I could only so much to prepare. Now that I actually know the exact days of moving the pressure is on.
I have been full go since finding out and have been trying to check things off my list. I have so much to do still and a few things are still up in the air. As some of you probably already know because of twitter, I'm trying to buy a house in Sacramento. The housing prices are lower than they have been for years and the rates are the lowest they've ever been. Plus I'm a firm believer of putting my money into something I'll own instead of paying rent and it not being mine.
So far I've been packing and going through clothing. I've also booked a moving truck. I got one where they drive it across country for me and that scares me to no end! I won't actually see my stuff for almost a week and it'll just be out there in the world. Crossing fingers that nothing goes missing! (the company I'm using was actually recommended to someone I know who used them about a year ago).
The biggest thing that still needs to be done is finding a place to live. I've got my lender ready and my realtor has been sending me houses. In two weeks I'm going to fly out and spend two days looking at houses non stop. I'm praying that I can find a home that I love in those 48 hours and get my offer in and it be accepted. Once I've got that in place I'll feel so much better!
Any advice? I'm learning really quickly that I need to get rid of a lot of stuff and only taking what I'm really not willing to part with. The move gets closer day by day!

Ah! So stressful... and exciting :) But the actual packing and cleaning part is the worst!
I can't wait for you to go out and look at the houses! All I have to say is don't feel the pressure to put an offer in on a house you don't love. It IS possible to find something that makes you happy in every way (even if your sacrificing some "wants" for the house) but that is A LOT of money if you don't totally love it.
Sorry lady but I do not envy you. I hate moving... and the biggest move I've ever made has been about half an hour.
I'm sure you'll feel amazing once all is said and done though.
Good luck with the move friend! Glad you finally got your transfer!
I've moved before... But only within the state, so I don't think that counts.
Praying for peace and for the perfect house! I actually read online that home prices in Sacramento are super low right now, so it's AWESOME you get to buy at the perfect time :)
moving is so stressful, i'm moving cross country in 2 months and just dreading the preparation!
That's so nerve-wracking! I'm sure once you find a house you'll feel much better. And if you don't? It's okay to rent for a little bit than buy something that doesn't totally suit you and be stuck with it! Yeah, it might mean another move, but at least then you'll have less stuff ;)
Good luck!
So exciting! I need to get my arse on twitter more so I see more current updates about your move! I have totally sucked at twitter lately. :( My friend just moved across the country and had the same stuff going on. And the moving company was GREAT but they got held up b/c of a storm and she didnt get her stuff for another few days. It was a hot mess, but it all worked out and she's so happy. I hope you find a house while you're there with your realtor! So exciting!
AND I got my card yesterday! YOU ROCK MY SOCKS! Thank yuo so much! Eric was funny. He saw it and was like "She lives where I travel for work all the time! I should say hello!" I was like "That's weird. She's my friend, not yours." hahahaha.. I'm a jerk like that sometimes. ;)
This is absolutely so stressful. And while I moved around the world - I only brought two suit cases full of stuff.
I don't have any advice except this: I think while I'd try to be hopeful and positive about finding a house - I've the heard the process is REALLY hard. Offers get accepted and then taken away blah blah blah - so I think my advice is this (it's impossible I think): stay positive that you'll find place (you will!) but be realistic that it might not be in the 48 hours you're there (GAH).
What a big, amazing life change! Maybe some Sacramento bloggers can help you scope out houses. :) I've moved cross country before--it's tough, but it will be worth it once you get there!
The fartheset I have ever moved is about an hour, but my parents made the move 30 years ago from DC to Seattle and I can only imagine the stress! Hang in there and good luck packing!
Good luck trying to find a house. My brother in law lives in the suburbs of Sacramento in a really nice area. it is kind of pueblo-pheonix style area of houses. I can't remember the neighborhood though. I hope that you find one you love and that it goes smoothly.
