AM/PM

Today I start working on the morning shift. To say that I am less than thrilled is an understatement. I have to get up for work at 2:50 a.m. I have to be standing in the building and on the clock by 4:00 a.m. Let me just tell you, no one should ever be at work that early unless it's from the other side. I'm dreading it. For real

You see... at my job we bid on schedules. When I came to Sacramento I didn't know where I'd fall into their bid because I'm not new but I haven't been with the organization as long as some people have. I've got almost 4 years under my belt so that is something. However, certain people specialize in categories and I'm one of those people. Out of say, I don't know maybe 250 employees only about 30 of those people there specialize in what I do. In those 30 people only 11 are female. Guess where I ended up out of those 11 people? Oh you might have guessed it... 11. Dead last

Great.

So when it came time to bid, I looked at all the slots and hoped, prayed and crossed my fingers that one of the pm slots would still be available for me to take. The bid here takes two full days because this is when everyone is bidding on their schedule. At the end of the first day, there was two pm slots left and three females. I talked with both women and they told me they were staying pm. I knew walking into that room on the second day that all that would be left was an AM slot. I don't know what I was hoping for, maybe a miracle but that's all that was left on the paper.

Lame.

So I didn't even really have a choice. I could quit but hello, I have this little thing called a MORTGAGE and other bills. So that's not an option. Ever. In the few weeks that followed the bid, before it went into effect, I have been reaching out to everyone. Supervisors, scheduling, human resources, etc. Basically anyone that I think could possibly get another slot on the evening shift again. I'm sure when some of these people see my number on their caller ID, their like "Sweet Jesus not her again!" But guess what people persistence has to get you somewhere. Now I keep hear rumblings of a slot opening and I'm just hoping and praying that I can get my hands on it.

I'm not built for getting up for work like that. I did it the first year I worked for this organization and it was awful. I was so tired from work that when I got home, I could never get anything accomplished. Then when I would finally eat something (from after feeling nausea all day probably from being up so early) that it would be time to go back to sleep and start the vicious cycle all over again. So wish me good luck today and let's hope I get some good news on being able to go back to the pm slots in 2 weeks.

Ugh, even I don't have to be up that early! That is such a bummer. Could this eventually change down the line?

You can do it, you can do it, you can do it. Fingers crossed that you get a better shift...because really, waking up this early requires you to be in bed by the time we eat dinner. :( No bueno!!

Hugs!!!

Oh wow! This sounds absolutely horrible.

I'm definitely cut out for a shift where I start work at about 7 or 6:30 am and work until 3, that's my preference!

Good luck!

When is the next bid (do they do them yearly or something?)

Oh my gosh! I don't even know how I would handle that, seriously. I am SO not a morning person . . . I can hardly deal with being at work at a normal hour (fortunately, I work from home most days and when I do have meetings, they're not before 10). I'm crossing my fingers for you, girl!

That is too early for anyone to be awake. Ugh, 4 am start time. Man, that sounds horrible. I'm so sorry! Hopefully you'll be able to switch soon.
