Christmas Party Outfit...Help!

So I'm headed to my first Christmas party of the season and I have no idea if this dress is going to be appropriate. I'm going to my first ever, law firm Christmas party. I don't want to be under dressed or over dressed. It's being held at a bar/restaurant. I've also been told that it's open bar for the evening. The person I'm going with will be wearing a suit and tie because it's right after he gets off work.
So my question to all of you is....would this dress work? I'm thinking of pairing it with black tights and either black shoes or boots.

Please tell me what you think! The dress can be found on Target's site here. My only concern is that it might not be dressy enough.

Hmmm. My opinion is to keep looking. I don't think it's dressy enough for a holiday party. It'd be great for a casual get-together, but I'd keep searching.

you might want to try to dress it up a bit...maybe even try to go with something a little less plaid--or a big fat black belt would work too. the plaid may or may not work. simple red top black skirt would be cute or a black version of that paired with a long necklace and the tights and shoes would be cute. dont forget to accessorize.

you made my best of list

maybe its because i am not that dressy of a person, but i think it would be perfect with some black tights and boots. you could dress it up with some fun jewelry or something like that, i dunno, that is just me! i like stuff like that because you can dress them up or down! it's not something you would just wear once, ya know? anyway, good luck! have fun at the party!!

Very cute, but not dressy enough.

I think its too casual. But I looked at target and wonder if you'd thought about any of these?

Or if you really want plaid maybe like this?

But with a jacket or shrug or something.

Of course what really matters is that you have fun. So do that!

I think you should probably keep searching. It might be to casual for a law firm party. Check out all the local sales right now at places like Dillards and Macy's. They are sure to have something cute and appropriate.

I think it's a little too casual for a law firm Christmas party. That sounds like you should be getting the LBD out.

I don't think that's near dressy enough, especially since your date will be donning a suit and tie. I'd go for a dress with a bit more structure for this event. Always remember: Better to be over-dressed than under-dressed!

i don't think it's dressy enough - maybe if it was all black and you could wear some super cool dressy shoes and great accessories - but the plaid is a bit too casual -- so totally agree with tonja jere kids comment....you'll find something hun!

I'd say if your date is wearing a suit that this wouldn't be dressy enough for the party. But.... you should get it anyway for other occasions. :-)

I love the dress! BUT.. I'm worried a little that it's not enough.

I actually think you could try and dress it up with flashy accessories, but if your "date" is wearing a suite and tie after work you might want to find something you don't need to dress up as much. Or go with something all black. It's easier to dress up straight black... in opinion at least.

I'm not sure - it could be really cute but I'd want to see it in person. However if it isn't your company and you aren't likely to see that group of people together again, I'd say wear something you feel comfortable in.

I don't think its dressy enough either. Cute, but not for a holiday party. I did see a CUTE red satin dress at target. There are black ones too.

Honeslty, it's a super cute dress but I think you might feel under dressed. I think the print is what makes it casual. I would probably go for something dressier. But still it's a cute dress.

I agree with everyone else, it's not dressy enough for a law firm. I would go with a little black dress if you have one.

It's super cute, but I don't think it is dressy enough, good luck girl!

not sure about it. i like it, yes. but not for that event. i don't think it's dressy enough. try something "boring" like a black dress and then sort of add some funk to it, like a big red belt, or a colorful scarf, or something like that. :D let us know what you came up with!!

I think you will feel underdressed. Do you have a silk or satin cocktail dress? I have a couple in black, ivory and two prints and those are my go to dresses for christmas parties.
Cocktail dress + black tights +heels= Works everytime

I would go with a LBD...I think that even if you and him were the only 2 ppl who are dressed up, it would be fine. Besides, I truly think that others will be wearing dressy clothes too, if it is a "open bar" situation.

It's cute but a little casual for a Christmas party. Great for hanging out though!

I would go for something a little more dressy. It's cute but not for the office party.

I don't think it's dressy enough. Try a little black dress, they're always perfect!

If you're dead-set on that dress, I'd dress it up. :) Super cute, though.

Can never go wrong with a lil' black cocktail dress girl! Accessories matter. Match it up with sassy earrings and some necklaces. :)

Hmmm...it's cute but maybe a LBD might be a little safer for a law firm.
I do think you should get the dress to wear elsewhere :)

so.....get this, i work at a lawfirm and we have our holiday party on friday and i was going to wear this same dress!!!
just in a different color. BUT, most of the attorneys at our firm will be dressed down, probably most in jeans and nice shirts. we are going to a nice place for drinks and apps but it's a casual setting.
so if the party is casual but still at a nice place i think the dress will be okay. otherwise, maybe find something a little more dressy. i bought a different dress for $20 at target a while back and it's more dressy and super cute. if i can find a link for it, i'll send it to you!
the plaid dress is kinda short, i'm 5' 2" and the dress is short enough on me that i'll be wearing black leggins with it for sure and either heals or flats with it.

The long lost commenter is back! Honestly, I don't think its dressy enough. It's cute, so you should definitely get it, but to wear on a different occasion. If you want to go plaid, I'd go with a black/grey plaid skirt sort of thing.

That is a very cute dress! But I have to agree with some of the other ladies, that it isn't quite dressy enough. When I look at it, it just doesn't scream "Christmas party attire"

I agree that it's too casual for a law firm party. Target has some very cute black dresses that you can jazz up with sparkley jewelry and heels.
